The History of Online Slots

Many do not know that slot machines used to refer to any type of vending machine that required a coin to be dropped into a slot in order to get the treat that was inside.  In more modern times, slot machines have become synonymous with the machines that can be found in casinos and that pay off when certain numbers or symbols line up.

Slot machines are often referred to as the one armed bandit because of the arm that needed to be pulled in order to spin the reels or for those in the United Kingdom, the fruit machine because many of the slot machine symbols are fruit based.  Most of the first one armed bandits had three wheels that spun.

The first slot machine was not invented by anyone in Las Vegas or in any other famous gaming city; it was actually invented in San Francisco by of all things, a car mechanic named Charles Fey.  The first slot machine was called the Liberty Bell because when three liberty bells lined up for the player, they would win the maximum prize.

Charles Frey’s first Liberty Bell machine is on display in Reno Nevada.  Mr. Frey also designed and produced many other types of three wheel one armed bandits including the first draw poker machine.

The slot machine has come along way since the first Liberty Bell machine was played over a century ago.  Now machines include high quality graphics with music and multi line wins.
